1. Cancel subscriptions
This is an easy way to cut back on expenses. Every few months, I double check my subscriptions and re-evaluate what I’m really using. Most recently, I canceled GrubHub+ because we weren’t using that service very often. I had signed up on a trial and forgotten about it – oops! Staying on top of subscriptions is a no-brainer to keep your expenses in check.
2. Meal plan
Ruthlessly meal planning can save you hundreds per month, as food is often a family’s biggest expense after housing. Simply having a plan will benefit you by not buying unnecessary things and avoiding impulse take-out nights, but there are dozens of ways to cut expenses further. I’m a recent convert to Costco, which is saving our family a fair amount. Besides where you shop, it’s important to consider what ingredients you’re using. Meat is one of the biggest expenses, so switch to a couple vegetarian dishes per week can save you money. I also love Budget Bytes for inexpensive meal ideas. She has both meat and vegetarian dishes on her site, which I’ve been using for close to 10 years. I haven’t encountered a bad recipe. Here are other ways to save on groceries.
3. Buy secondhand
Going to thrift stores happens to be a thrill for me, because I never know what treasures I will find. But even if it doesn’t excite you to buy used, it’s undoubtedly a good way to save money. I have been able to find clothes and shoes for myself and my children in excellent condition both at thrift stores and on Facebook marketplace. It’s also great to check garage sales, where I’ve found a lot of toys and games for the kids.
4. Renegotiate or switch providers
You can often renegotiate your cell phone plan or insurance policy. Do a little research on other providers and find out how much you could save. When you talk to your current provider, be adamant about dropping them. This will bring you to someone who works in retention, who will probably lower your price to keep you with their service. If you could still save money with the other provider, make the switch. Just be sure to go over the terms and conditions carefully.
5. Check your library and parks & rec departments for free entertainment
Your local library may have events to entertain your little ones. In addition to regular Story Time sessions, our library offers ice cream socials, crafts, magic shows, lego clubs, and much more. The Parks and Rec department also has free or inexpensive events and classes.
